Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Lots Of Pots Boiling

I heard a conversation today about drug companies and how much they make on drugs that make it to market.  Someone commented on the big profit from those drugs, but the response was that you can’t forget about all the drugs they work on that don’t make it.  That’s how drug companies work.  You keep lots of pots boiling.

Same thing in recruiting, but I think it’s easy for recruiters to forget that sometimes.  You have to have a lot of deals in the works in contingency recruiting because third party recruiters only get the difficult searches.  Much like the drug business, many of those deals won’t make it so you have to keep lots of pots boiling.  This is a good analogy to keep in mind as you make plans and review your business.

There are other details from the drug business that apply in recruiting as well.  Quality control – knowing when a deal just isn’t going to work.  Allocation of resources – knowing how much energy, time, and effort to put into a deal at any time.  So we all need to keep in mind that all drugs don’t make it to market and all deals in contingency recruiting don’t make it.  If you want to be profitable, keep lots of pots boiling.
