Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Momentum, Persistence, and Opportunity

Watching tennis at the U.S. Open the last few days, I’ve seen a lot of matches. One thing that junped out at me more than just about anything else is how momentum swings are such a huge part of every match.

It is so consistent that it paints a clear picture of how mental the game is. In match after match we see one player or doubles team getting beat badly and looking like they are ready to give up, when they finally start to click and grab the momentum back. As they get in a zone you can see the momentum draining away from the other player or team as the pressure builds on them.

The great part about something like the U.S. Open is, they are all professional players. So they all have a lot of talent and they have all played an awful lot of tennis. They all seem to know that if they keep playing and focusing, they can get the momentum back. This happens in match after match and it really shows a lot about human nature and performance.

Momentum, streaks, and getting in a zone are all part of human nature and performance. Success in business is no different. The momentum can come or go in a moment, and those that keep working towards it will get it more often.
