Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Finding, Not Creating

November 19, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Those in this business who know me, know that one of my favorite sayings is that this is a business of finding, not creating.  We’ve had some real good examples lately that highlight this.

One position that we just filled had been very difficult to fill for quite some time.  The right candidate was just not findable by us or the client.  But things change and all of sudden, with good consistent sourcing, the right candidate surfaced.  It was clear as could be from the first interview that this was the right candidate.

For any position, there is a right candidate or right candidates.  The only question is if you can find them.  We had another one recently where the candidate really didn’t have the background we were looking for.  Yet the candidate put on a good pitch for why they did meet the specs and we submitted.  As soon as they interviewed, of course, it was discovered that he wasn’t the right candidate.

This happens all too often.  Rather than wasting time trying to position a candidate or sell a candidate for a position that they aren’t quite right for, we should be spending all of our energy on efforts to find the right person.  You can’t fit a square peg in a round hole without breaking the system.
