Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Unemployment 9.8%

December 3, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Okay, so the unemployment numbers are up to 9.8%.  The private sector added only 39,000 jobs when we need something like 200,000 added each month to get this thing down to 8% by 2012.  We are also in the middle of the period where retailers are adding temporary workers.

No matter what you think about the turnaround here, this is a bad sign or at least a sign that we are in a tough environment that looks like it will last a long time.  Now I still believe that the business world as a whole is hardened and stronger after the ’08 crisis.  I don’t think the average business owner or division VP is surprised by challenging circumstances now and they are finding ways to try and perform well even in difficult times.  This is the primary reason that I’m hopeful that the worst we will see for recruiting is over.  But make no mistake, high unemployment like this is not good for our business.

There are some real big issues with this.  Probably the worst issue is that we are developing a class of long term unemployed or woefully underemployed people in this country.  When you have around 10% of the population unemployed and much more than that (maybe 16% to 20%) under employed or unemployed, then we are developing a huge drag on the economy.

So take heart.  If you are doing business now, you can do business in the worst of times.  That goes for recruiting and other industries.  At this point it seems like we have settled in to what the post bubble world is going to be.
