Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Good Marketing

December 8, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

I heard one of those lines today that just makes me chuckle a little bit.  The client / prospective client said that, due to the specific nature of their high end search, they are going with a big name high brow firm (not to be named here) on that particular search.  I’ve run into this a few times before and with the same high brow firm involved.

That’s great marketing.  It really is.  They’ve positioned themselves, at least in this case, to be thought of as a cut above.  I chuckle because in those previous cases the client soon realized that it was marketing and not results and we ended up filling the positions after they had given the firm some time to try.  After a while in business, you realize just how much BS there is out there.  In all industries, there are those who are more about positioning than about results.  But the great thing about recruiting is that the proof is in the pudding.  You can’t hide behind positioning or marketing in this business.

So I chuckle a little to myself and respectfully let the prospective client know that we are very interested in working on it whenever appropriate.  They may be good enough to find the right person, but it will be the actual work that will do it if they are.  The name on the door won’t get it done.
