Random Thoughts On Recruiting – It’s Just Business

January 12, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

I had a conversation with a colleague yesterday about a recruiter that he is mentoring.  What I believe is one of the most important and difficult things for people in our industry to stay focused on came up.  He asked me how I thought the new recruiter was doing and I said my only fear is that he may have the attitude that “since he found a good candidate, the client must hire them”.

It just doesn’t work that way.  In this business more than any that I know of, we have to take the emotion out of it.  The best way to do that is to develop an “It’s Just Business” attitude.  The fact is, in nearly all cases, if you have the right candidate then the client will hire them.  So getting wound up and wasting energy on the deal that didn’t happen or the candidate that did not work out does nothing but detract from the amount of energy spent on running the business and finding the right candidate.

Over time, I think everyone who lasts in recruiting develops this attitude to some degree.  It’s not easy though and it takes time to really make that perspective and that attitude a permanent part of you.  So wherever you are in that journey, just remember that it’s just business and if you focus on it as just that, you’ll be more efficient and do more of it.
