Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Why Things Are Getting Better, One Reason

As many of us have discussed, things are a little better, or on the mend, or however you want to describe the improvement.

One of the reasons for the improvement really jumped out at me today after some calls with clients.  People are less reluctant to spend money.  Sounds simple, but there are some real basic factors to how good or bad conditions are in recruiting.  One of them is how reluctant business owners, and those in charge of divisions of companies, are to spend money.  We need companies to be growing and to have needs that are difficult to fill for whatever reason, and that has been missing.  There are other factors that have been problematic as well and the reason this downturn was so difficult is that we had many negative factors.

The reluctance to spend mony, even if the need for the hire was there, was really strong in the midst of the downturn.  That has faded.  We heard today that retail sales are up some and consumers are spending more money.  Incomes are not up significantly, unemployment is not down, and savings certainly aren’t up.  So this could be a dangerous path for consumers in general, but nonetheless, spending is up some.  The consumer’s reluctance to spend is down, and so is the reluctance to spend from business owners at the moment.  So the fee in recruiting is not the key issue right now.  The ability to find the right candidate is.  Don’t know how long this will last, but this is one reason why things are getting better.
