Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Unemployment Still Bad, Productivity Up?

Unemployment is still bad.  Down to 9%, but that’s a big number.  Only 36,000 new jobs were created when expections were for 100,000 to 150,000.  So why is the unemployment number down?  Over the last two months a million people left the work force, no longer looking for work.

Productivity is up.  Some say this is because companies are hanging on to the productive people.  Think about that.  In a very difficult economy over the last couple of years, companies layed off unproductive workers.  Makes sense.  They slimmed down as much as they could to still run their businesses and kept their best workers.  As things have gotten better here, we are out recruiting the best people we can find for companies so, if they add anyone, they add productive people.  This is a pretty decent development for companies and for us recruiters.

But are we developing a permanent unemployed class?  I think we are and I think that will be a big drag on our economy going forward.  No matter what happens, I can’t see Americans being willing to have people dying in the streets.  A large class of people who do not work or are underemployed will have to be taken care of.  This is something to pay attention to going forward.  I don’t know that there is an easy solution.
