Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Charging Candidates

February 15, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

I’ve seen a few posts lately about The Ladders and about charging candidates for help in a job search in general.  I’ve also talked with a few people lately who are looking for a job change and have brought up some of these things.

From my perspective, there is no reason that candidates should ever be charged in a job search.  I don’t think there is anything that could be more ripe for abuse than charging candidates.  If a company needs help finding someone for a particular role, they pay in some way.  They place an ad, they hire a recruiter, or use some other tool that helps them find the right people.  To take it the other way and suggest that value can be provided to the candidate in order to find them the right opportunity seems to be just flat out wrong if you understand how recruiting works, and what recruiting is all about.

I’m sure there are those that disagree and try to employ that kind of business model.  But then again, there are a lot of crappy business models.
