Random Thoughts On Recruiting – My Problem With The Claims About The Big East

My problem with the claims about the Big East that I’ve heard are a good example of something that really irks me.  It’s not that I don’t like the Big East.  It’s all about making a claim and then changing your story.

A week ago I heard a sports talk radio guy claim that the Big East has separated itself from the other conferences.  That it is so much better than the other conferences that it is like the SEC is in football.  Sports fans know that the SEC beats up on other conferences in football and has been routinely winning national championships.  There is a lot of evidence that they have separated themselves.  All throughout this basketball season I’ve heard these people claim that the Big East is far better than the other conferences and I’ve heard how bad the ACC is.  Now I am an ACC fan, so that bugs me a little.

So the Big East got 11 teams into the NCAA Tournament.  That’s fine.  I have no problem with that.  However, the claim was that they are so much better than the other conferences that surely their teams were going to beat up on the other teams in the tourney.  Through the first weekend of the tournament, they have been knocked down from 11 teams to only 2 left.  Florida State, the 3rd out of 4 teams from the ACC that got in, blew away Notre Dame, the second place team in the Big East, last night.  That weak conference, the ACC, got 4 teams in and have 3 left.  Oh, and by the way, the ACC won the last two national championships, 3 of the last 6, and 5 of the last 10.  But the claim was that the Big East has separated itself?

All of this is fine, even for an ACC fan like me.  But today, on the same sports talk radio show, they get on and defend the Big East saying that people are now saying they shouldn’t have gotten 11 teams in, but really they should have.  No, that’s not what people are saying.  People are saying that it is pretty clear that the Big East is not head and shoulders above all of the other conferences and you had them over rated.  What bothers me is changing your story to defend yourself.  When it happens in business it is infuriating.  Character shows in little ways.
