Random Thoughts On Recruiting – Lack of Expectation

September 13, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments
This is a good post with some points that I like. Number one is particularly relevant for us today. We’re in the midst of a record quarter. Business is really good. Today we got news on a couple of deals that are not going to work out. On one of the deals you can just hear the disappointment in the recruiter’s voice. The candidate won’t be moving forward. In the other, we had a client let us know that a candidate we thought had an excellent chance of working out is not going to work out. That recruiter is having an record quarter with us, made a placement yesterday, and the news that this candidate won’t work out has absolutely no affect on them. The expectation that deals are not going to work out can help keep a recruiter on an even keel.

I would alter this a bit to say that it is best to have no expectations, not negative expectations. That’s hard to achieve in anything, let alone recruiting. But good recruiters understand the business well enough to know that all candidates are not the right hire, all companies are not the right place for all candidates. We are most effective when we can balance motivation to do business with a lack of expectations in regard to any one deal.

Are you just passing through the recruiting profession, or are you really a career recruiter? Find out the top 4 signs to see if you’re a career recruiter!
