Hire or Train

A client told me today that they decided to fill their role with an internal promotion and they will train them. They said they just weren’t seeing what they needed from the outside.

Last week another client told me he really didn’t want to make an internal move to fill a role because he didn’t have the skills in house, but he was going to have to make that decision if he couldn’t find someone from the outside quickly. We found that person and he made his hire.

We hear the argument all the time that companies should train and that would solve the skills gap, but this is plays out in individual situations. Hiring managers don’t care about the overall skills gap. They care about running their business. Sometimes the best answer is to train. Sometimes the best answer is to hire from outside.
