Why Are There So Many Unfilled Positions

September 29, 2012 Leave a comment Go to comments

The skills gap, they say. Lots of unemployed people, but they don’t have the skills we need.

But that’s not really it. We have a lot of unemployed people because a bunch of industries were bubble fat and when the bubble burst the need need for many of those employees went away.

The reason that there are so many unfilled positions is that the war for talent is full on. After the bubble burst, companies slashed cost and payroll and got very efficient. Now they want to grow and they need specific skills to do that in their new efficient form.

Yes, that creates a skills gap, but one based on more companies that are more efficient and have yet to grow to the point where they need the mass employment that we had before.
