When To Get Upset About A Negotiation

If you’re doing it right, never.

In negotiations we run into all kinds of situations and I have to shake my head when one or both parties start to get upset. The first thing you must do in all negotiations is to figure out exactly what your bottom line is, your walk away number. It can’t be an about this or around that. You need a hard number.

Once you have that, the rest is easy. You can start higher and work your way there and there is a world of flexibility in how you can handle that. Of course, you have to be willing to walk away and you will be if your number is a true walk away number. If the other party is not willing to meet your number then the deal isn’t right. It’s that simple and everyone has a right to have a walk away number. Any company can set any price that they are willing to pay you and any candidate can set a minimum that he or she is willing to work for.
