Zero Sum Game?

At first glance recruiting seems like a zero sum game? When Company A recruits a talented individual away from Company B, then Company A’s gain is Company B’s loss.

But that’s too simplistic. A talented individual may be much better off in a different place for a variety of reasons. The work, the people, the environment etc…. When that individual is in a better place, their performance and contribution will be significantly better. For Company B, there is a better fit as well in most cases. Somebody fits that environment and situation better than the candidate that left, or that candidate wouldn’t have left.

Realizing that it is not a zero sum game frees you up to focus on finding and bringing in the best fit.
