The One Candidate

It’s possible that there is only one potential candidate for your position. One candidate and no others.

Most of the time that is not the case. When the candidate you’re talking to says no, they aren’t in the pool and it’s best to go find one that is. Forcing a no into a yes is hard and the odds are against you. The reluctance also makes it a potential problem going forward even if you succeed in changing their mind. If you are certain that there is only one potential candidate, start a conversation but keep your expectations in check until things change. Otherwise, go find a real potential candidate.
