Short Term vs Long Term

The argument is out there. Is it better to base your talent management on short term employment or the long term company man approach where companies make a long term commitment to the employee and that is reciprocated?

Right now we are somewhere in the middle. Employment is certainly shorter term on average than it used to be. There are some people in the short term contract to contract world and some companies that are making that work. More employment is permanent, but lasts for a shorter period of time than the full career ideal of the past.

The fact is that some companies are better suited for short term work while many others are best served by permanent employment, and that’s not going to change. Most companies can’t accomplish what they would like to with short term contract talent flowing through the organization. The key is to understand what works best for your business and in specific areas of your business.
