The Participation Question

January 21, 2014 Leave a comment Go to comments

The question is out there about labor force participation. Is the lack of participation due more to unemployed workers dropping out or baby boomers retiring?

The answer is certainly some of both, but how much of each is important. As the economy gets better and we all go to work each day running our businesses and departments, there is an edge of concern about the economy and how it will do going forward with low labor force participation. The impact on recruiting is twofold. More participation is better for the economy. More people earning more money and able to spend it, helping to drive growth. However, lower participation means smaller candidate pools for specific skill sets making recruiting more challenging.
