Employers and Privacy

February 14, 2014 Leave a comment Go to comments

Lately we’ve heard a lot of talk about employers and privacy. Searching social profiles or knowing medical conditions.

How much should employers be allowed to know? How much should employees or potential employees be compelled to share?

From my perspective, the answer is that they have the right to know enough to determine if you can benefit their business in the way that they need. No more, but definitely that much. The employer needs to be able to run their business the best way they can, and that includes putting the pieces that they need in place. It doesn’t include knowing things about an employee’s private life that don’t affect the work or business.
